The Fundamentals of Graduation! Why Celebrating Your Graduation Is Important
Posted by James Arnold on
In August 2021, Trinity College Dublin hosted its first in-person graduation ceremony ever since the pandemic closed most of the college campuses in Ireland around March 2020. With more events regarding graduations and end-of-uni life, more post-university students are questioning whether attending their graduation is worth the trouble of catching COVID-19.
While we at Beaver Frames highly recommend staying safe and following measures accordingly, we also fully recommend attending your graduation - or at the very least, celebrating your graduation (one way or another).
Importance of Graduation in a COVID-19 World

To put it simply, COVID-19 made students across the world work harder than they’ve ever worked before. The transition from secondary school to university in itself is an incredibly difficult and demanding process due to the amount of work you need to complete, and with the addition of COVID-19, students are now faced with an ever-growing challenge of limited communication between lecturers and peers, online lessons and lack of social interaction between students.
In short, the importance of graduation in a pandemic means that you get to celebrate years of work that was tremendously harder than other students outside of the pandemic will ever experience.
Reasons Why Attending Your Graduation Ceremony Is Important!
The importance of graduation may be blurry for most graduate students due to the work they’ve done across the pandemic. It could be that because their work was mostly done online that they feel their work was not worth celebrating, or maybe an entirely different reason that affected their work due to COVID-19.
We’re here to convince you that the work you’ve done during the pandemic, and the hardships you endured in addition to the difficulties posed by COVID-19, is worth celebrating all of your hard work. Besides the obvious benefits you get from graduating (a handshake from your higher-ups and of course, a certificate!), the positive effects for your well-being after graduating and the social benefits can often outweigh any negative outcomes from attending your graduation or celebrating it (if any).
A Chance To See Your Friends

Graduation is the moment dedicated to celebrating your hard work, and we’re sure that you’re definitely not alone. This is also a moment for you to celebrate with the people who have been on the same journey as you, with those who worked alongside you eventually moving on into new things. Who knows, maybe you’ll see them again, but this is a chance for you to spend one last moment with them, and what better way to spend your potential last moments with your university or college colleagues than celebrating your hard work!
A Chance To Thank Your Peers

While graduation is a great time to look back at the struggle you went through during university, and the hardships acquired through educational moments, graduation is also a time for you to be thankful for those who helped you along the way. This could be the friends you made in class, your favourite lecturers, and possibly workmates from placement opportunities.
Celebrate Your Achievement!

Not to state the obvious, but graduation is a fundamental part of your life for the simple reason that you will be celebrating your achievements. It’s a landmark event that segues your experience from student to adult citizen. Symbolically, graduation is also a time of change and progression, so taking a moment to reflect on what you’ve achieved will be a valuable highlight reel in your memories.

Now that we’ve established the fundamentals of graduation, there are reasons why celebrating your achievements (outside of graduation) is also highly valuable for mental progression and well-being. Whether you want to go on a trip with your friends for the last time, or have a simple dinner with family, all celebrations to mark the end of your university studies.
To Prove Your Progress

Spending four, three or maybe even less than that is a gigantic achievement that you shouldn’t let go so easily. Celebrating your hard work allows you to prove to your peers (and most importantly, yourself) that you’ve achieved your degree through hard work and perseverance.
To Acknowledge Your Academic Achievement

Whether your course was in biomedical engineering or performing arts, your academic achievement is something that you will want to carry with you throughout your life in order to acknowledge what you’ve done during college or university. It’s a difficult, but rewarding road ahead of student living, and proof of your academic background is a tool you can use in order to stay ahead. Celebrate your achievement to let yourself know the value that you hold for employers all over the world!
To Get What You Worked Hard For

What was the reason you worked so hard at your course? To build your skills? Meet new like-minded people? Get career-focused advice from experienced professionals? All of the above?
Whatever the reason may be, the end of university life means that you’ve achieved what you worked hard for, and that should be a valuable reason in itself. From the people that you’ve met to the assignments and exams you’ve finished along the way, celebrating your reach to the finish line is a momentous occasion that should be celebrated in any way possible!
